On 'Kris Aquino' hacker, ‘Mansion Hoax’ and the mistweet

Did Noynoy Aquino III’s camp just wage a net war of sorts against Manny Villar?

Just recently, a hacker using the alias “Kris Aquino” posted a blog entry on Villar’s site maliciously twitting his camp for using children in furthering their political agenda.

Dated March 19, the entry read: “Omigosh kalerky to the max. Imagine, may I gamit pa mga kids sa commercial to make sipsip to the poor. Pano naman kaming mga richhh!”

The blogger then asked the readers to vote for Aquino, redirecting a portion of the site to the Liberal Party’s official site.

The Nacionalista Party had already pulled out the entry. They issued a statement that was shared in social networks.

“We are extremely disturbed by the hacking of Sen. Manny Villar’s website by persons unknown,” said Gilbert Remulla, NP spokesman and senate candidate.

Remulla said the attack was seemingly made because they are now the “front-runner in the 2010 elections.”

“Underground elements seem to persist, and a cyber war is being waged against us--what with the flurry of black propaganda texts and 'mansion hoax' e-mails to spoofing our identity on social networks… clearly, this hacking attempt was meant to negatively impact on our campaign's goodwill,” he added.

The “Mansion Hoax” was a chain mail circulating since early last month, which featured photos of the interior of a palatial home allegedly owned by the Villars.

The e-mail, "Who owns a house like this?" was sent to several e-groups. It was prefaced with the question: "Imagine who would have such taste and live in such opulence?"

The NP refuted the charge. Villar’s daughter, Camille, even made light of it.

“It would be hard to clean a house that big,” she said.

The NPO also released the result of their investigation on the email, showing that it has been circulating as early as 2008, and that the said mansion was first linked to Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe; former Nigerian military ruler Ibrahim Babangida; Indian film star Shahrukh Khan; and Edir Macedo, founder of the Universal Church of the Kingdom of God.

Meanwhile, Leah Navarro, content head of the online new media bureau of Noynoy Aquino, had denied allegations that they are the source of the cyber poison.

“We don’t do that,” Navarro said. “(It) could be a case of (the tail) wagging the dog.”

Early this week, Aquino III’s camp had to deflect a net issue as well—this time pertaining to a seemingly suspicious tweet that was broadcast Tuesday morning on the presidential aspirant's official Twitter account, which read thus:

“Won’t be bringing a car to work na everyday! Stupid taxi who bumped my car! 5k down the drain!”

The tweet elicited mostly amused response, but the camp eventually issued a statement declaring it a “mistweet.”

Navarro cleared that Aquino does not usually post messages on his account [@noynoyaquino].

“He’s not actually the one texting it in,” Navarro clarified.

“He usually just instructs his staff about what he wants to be posted,” she added explaining that an employee “mistakenly updated” the account with a personal missive not related to Aquino.
