Dancesports provide PHL 1st bronze in Asian Games

GUANGZHOU—Never underestimate the flair of the Filipino on the dance floor.

In an introductory discipline of the Asiad, Ronnie Steeve Vergara and Charlea Lagaras assembled cha cha cha and paso doble routines competitive enough for an international array of judges and worth bronze medals that momentarily stopped the bleeding in all other fronts for the Philippines in the 16th Asian Games here.

Driven by the memory of tough breaks in the standard category the day before, the Filipino couple danced their hearts out to capture the initial medals for the country. China’s Shi Lei and Zhang Baiyu won the gold in cha cha cha and Korea’s Kim Do Hyeon and Park Sumyo the silver.

In the paso doble, the gold went to China’s Wang Wei and Chen Jin, while the silver was won by Korea’s Jang Se Jin and Lee Hae In.

“We will keep on fighting. We know that our rivals are strong too but our dancers are determined," said Maria Neto of the DanceSports federation before the event.

In the general picture, China’s pace is a whirlwind that devours everyone within breathing distance, and even those who wishfully think they can catch up could only bite their nails in awe.

On the second day of competitions in the 16th Asian Games, China moved briskly to turn Japan and Korea into pseudo threats and all others stymied, including Filipinos who could not get past the first fence in the face of near Olympic-class performances.

Amid an all-China show in the medal standings, RP has yet to break into the elite circle of winners as the bleeding continued in rowing, shooting, swimming, tennis, triathlon, and dancesports.

On the previous day, the pesky soft tennis team missed the medal boat after a 2-1 loss to defending Asiad champion Chinese-Taipei, winding up fifth overall out of 14. Then the six-red balls women’s team of billiards dropped a controversial quarterfinal match against host China.

Chinese Taipei likewise prevented the advance of the Philippine lawn tennis squad to the medal phase, claiming the two singles matches in the quarters.

The Philippine billiards team had the most depressing day as Efren "Bata" Reyes and Roberto Gomez dropped their first-round assignments in 8-ball competitions, and Rey Grandea faltered in English billiards.

Alvin Barbero and Marlon Manalo also lost in the opening round of snooker.

In spite of the close victory of the men’s basketball team over the Athletes from Kuwait, 76-69, there was no cause for celebration at building 28-c, 28-d and 31 of the athletes’ village where Team Philippines is billeted.

Husband and wife Joel and Anabelle Madera flirted with the medal round in waltz, bowing out in the semis — the highest achievement at that point for the dancesport crew which made the quarterfinals in tango, foxtrot and Latin Five Dances events.

Filipino boxers flew in Saturday night as reinforcement, but the depletion of hope continued as Alvin Amposta and Roque Abala failed in heat two of rowing, finishing fourth among six with 6:55.36, way off leader Sun Zhang and Jie Guolin of China (6:27.81).

Mark Lloren Manosca was 45th among 50 in men’s 10 meter air pistol while Alyana Kystle Chuatoco was 44th among 52 in the qualifying stage of the distaff group.

The pools of Guangzhou were as unkind to Jessie King Lacuna, and Erica Totten. Lacuna was fifth among eight in his 200m freestyle heat and did not even start in the 100m butterfly heats.

Totten was dead last in a group of five,16.17 seconds behind winner Li Xuanxu of China who blazed to a 4:45.42 in the 400 individual medley.

Judoka Karen Ann Solomon had a fine start in beating Libya’s Louize Bourached in the 70 kgs. division, but successive losses to Korea’s Hwang Ye Sul and Mongolia’s Tsend Ayush Naranjargal in the repechage booted her out of the medal race.

Tested to the limit, 46-year-old John Baylon fought and lost to world number one Kim Jae Bum of Korea in the 81 kgs. class.

In another heart-breaker, Apryl Eppinger finished a notch shy in the qualifying run of women’s sprint in cycling (track).

Triathlete Neil Catiil was good only for 14th among 19 in the men’s individual category, more than 13 minutes behind the eventual winner Hosoda Yuichi who clocked 1:52:15.16.

Double handed dingy 470 racers Emerson Villena and Lester Troy Tayong placed fifth among seven in the event ruled by Japan’s Ryunosuke Harada and Yugo Yoshida, while Reneric Moreno ended up sixth in a field of 10 in men’s RSX.

Artistic gymnast Frances Audrey Munoz opened her bid in four events but results were not yet available as of Sunday afternoon.

Rubilen Amit, the strongest medal hope in women’s billiards, opens her campaign late Sunday, while in chess, grandmasters Joey Antonio and Wesley So seek to improve their 1-1 win-loss cards. Jackson Hong and Sandy Chua have the same targets in qiangqi or Chinese chess.

The dancesports team will also perform in the Latin dances contests, hoping to break China’s dominance. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Mercado playing; Ababou, Ramos out of PH five

GUANGZHOU—A hurting Solomon Mercado still made it to the 12-man Smart Gilas Pilipinas lineup that coach Rajko Toroman will be fielding for the Asian Games basketball competition starting here tomorrow.

Mercado, the Rain or Shine guard, got the clearance to play despite suffering a contusion on his left ankle and joined fellow PBA stars Asi Taulava of Meralco and Talk N Text’s Kelly Williams in the final roster.

Smart Gilas team captain Chris Tiu, JV Casio, Mark Barroca, Greg Slaughter Mac Baracael, Japeth Aguilar, Jason Ballesteros and overseas-based players Marcio Lassiter and Chris Lutz completed the list during the deliberation of the coaching staff Wednesday night.

Wingman Dylan Ababou and slotman Aldrech Ramos failed to make the cut although both players will be watching at the sidelines during the games along with naturalization candidate Marcus Douthit.

“The final lineup is versatile, athletic and quick. Exactly what we need for the Asiad,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Noli Eala.

The PH five, formed mainly to bring the country back to the Olympics in London 2012, faces Kuwait in the preliminary round tomorrow.

Gilas bares Asiad 'Dirty Dozen'

MANILA, Philippines - Despite nursing an injured left foot, Sol Mercado was included in the Final 12 of Smart Gilas Team Pilipinas for the 16th Asian Games basketball competition starting tomorrow in Guangzhou, China.

Also making the team are Mark Barroca, Jayvee Casio, Chris Tiu, Marcius Lassiter, Chris Lutz, Mac Baracael, Japeth Aguilar, Jason Ballesteros, Greg Slaughter, Kelly Williams and Asi Taulava.

Marcus Douthit is out since his naturalization papers were not processed in time. Dylan Ababou and Aldrech Ramos have been relegated to reserve list.

“The hardest part of a coach’s job is to tell guys like Dylan and Aldrech, who’ve been with the program since the start, that they didn’t make it. But that’s basketball,” said assistant coach Chot Reyes.

SBP officials submitted the Smart Gilas final lineup during the team managers’ meeting yesterday morning at the Guangzhou International Sports Arena.

According to SBP executive director Noli Eala, no Kuwaiti official was present in the meeting, but the original format and schedule stayed, pitting the Filipinos and the Kuwaitis in a knockout match at 7:15 p.m. tomorrow at the Guangti Gymnasium.

In a final warm-up for the Kuwait game, the Nationals were to battle the Dongguan Leopards last night in Dongguan City.

Should they get past the Kuwaitis, Smart Gilas earns a seat in the main draw, bracketed in Group E with Iran, Japan, Chinese Taipei, Qatar and the winner in the India-Afghanistan KO game.

SBP officials are hopeful of the Nationals’ chance against back-to-back FIBA Asia champion Iran with its top gun Nikah Bahrami out of the roster and 7-foot-2 center Hamed Haddadi a doubtful starter.

Host China, Jordan and South Korea loom as the top favorites.

The Koreans are aching to redeem themselves from a dismal fifth place finish in Doha, Qatar in 2006 – the first time in 48 years they missed a podium finish in the games.

In a determined bid to figure well in the medal race, the Koreans recruited NBA Hall of Fame coach Lenny Wilkens as technical adviser and twice pitched training camp in the United States.

Smart Gilas can go all the way, says Reyes

GUANGZHOU — Losing is not an option when the Smart Gilas national team takes on Kuwait in a knockout match Saturday at the start of the basketball competition in the 16th Asian Games.

Formed in early 2009, the Nationals risk coming home in a hail of tomatoes if they lose to the Kuwaitis whose participation had been subject of speculations at home.

Early reports said Kuwait had withdrawn, but the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) was later assured by organizers that the game will push through.

Despite the assurance, SBP executive-director Noli Eala said Kuwait was absent during the team manager’s meeting.

Unless the players forget to bring their jerseys, Smart Gilas should have no problem disposing of Kuwait which is competing under the banner of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

Based on the information submitted, the Kuwaitis have an average height of 5-11, small even by PBA standards.

The Filipinos played two tune-up matches since their arrival. They lost their first match against the Guangdong Tigers, 87-75, Wednesday and won against the Dongguan Leopards, 79-65, Thursday.

“I believe this team will go all the way and win a medal,” said Talk ‘N Text coach Chot Reyes who is here to assist Serbian head coach Rajko Toroman.

Reyes said it is unfair to compare the team that he handled during the 2007 FIBA-Asia and the current squad.

“They’re entirely different. Mine was a running team while Rajko’s more disciplined, structured,” said Reyes. “One thing going for Gilas is that it is better prepared.”

Reyes also noted that competition was tougher in FIBA-Asia because it serves as qualifying event for the Olympics.

“Many top players are missing because some teams don’t take the Asiad too seriously,” he said.

After beating the Leopards, the Nationals proceeded to the Athletes Village, their home for the next two weeks – or less.

On Friday, the Nationals held practice at a gym not provided by Games organizers.

The team’s official practice was set Saturday morning, but the coaching staff opted to lease the place for last-minute workout.

After Kuwait, the Nationals will have to contend with Asian champion Iran, Qatar, Chinese-Taipei, Japan and the winner between Afghanistan and India in a round robin series.

Reyes, So start RP’s bid for glory

GUANGZHOU — Two athletes, separated by four generations, and the fancied Smart Gilas national basketball team kick off the Philippines’ campaign in the 16th Guangzhou Asian Games Saturday.

Following the spectacular opening ceremony that ferried participants by boats, some 10,000 athletes get down to business of winning gold medals.

A total of 28 gold will be disputed on Day 1 of hostilities, including five in dance sport which is making its Asiad debut.

There’s little to expect from the Filipino dance performers who have to contend with the Chinese and Japanese in the two-day, 10-gold discipline.

Prospects of an early gold strike are slim, but there are a few bright spots that the Filipinos can draw inspiration from.

Pool legend Efren “Bata” Reyes and chess prodigy Wesley So are among blue-chip Filipino athletes seeing action Saturday.

Reyes, the 57-year-old vanguard of the billiards squad, has been seeded in the first round of the men’s singles 8-ball event. He awaits the winner of the match between Faquri Bahauddin of Afghanistan and Kumar Alok of India.

A two-time former world champion and Hall of Famer, Reyes swings into action at 7 p.m. looking for the only trophy missing in his cabinet.

Roberto Gomez Jr. is in the other side of the draw, also drawing a bye. He faces either Mazon Berjaoui of Libya or Sumit Talwar of India for a spot in the Round of 16 at 4 p.m.

So, 17, the highest-ranked Filipino chess player in history, begins his campaign in the men’s individual rapid chess event along with fellow grandmaster Joey Antonio.

The nine-round Swiss event will run for four straight days with each Filipino playing two games on the first day.

The day’s highly anticipated match will be in basketball at 7:30 p.m. when Smart-Gilas battles Kuwait in a knockout match for a spot in the next round.

The Nationals split two much-needed tune-up matches against Chinese club teams over the past two days to get ready for the do-or-die match.

They lost to the Guangdong Tigers, 87-75, Wednesday and defeated the Dongguan Leopards, 79-65, Thursday.

Absent during the 2006 Games in Doha, Qatar following FIBA suspension, the Nationals are hoping to join Iran, Qatar, Chinese-Taipei, Japan and the winner between Afghanistan and India in Group F.

The top four group finishers advance into the knockout quarterfinals.

Action in wushu also begins with top gold medal prospect Eduard Folayang, Mary Jane Estimar, Benjie Rivera, Mariane Mariano and Denver Labader taking on separate opponents.

Swimming also gets underway with three tankers seeing action. They are Jasmine Alkhaldi, Erica Totten and Jessie Lacuna.

Alkhaldi is entered in the women’s 200-meter freestyle along with Totten and in the women’s 100-meter butterfly.

On the other hand, Lacuna plunges into action in the men’s 200-meter butterfly.

Miguel Molina withdrew from the 400-meter individual medley to conserve his energy for the shorter medley distance.

In cycling, Fil-Australian Apryl Eppinger makes her Asiad debut in the women’s 500-meter time trial. The other Filipino entry, John Renee Mier, sees action in the men’s individual pursuit.

Judo has four final events, but the Filipinos are entered in only two of them – the women’s +78 kilogram (Ruth Dugaduga) and men’s +100 kilogram (Tomohiko Hoshina).

The Filipinos also have entries in shooting (Jayson Valdez, men’s 10m air rifle), wrestling (Margarito Angana, men’s Greco-Roman 55 kg.) and weightlifting (Nestor Colonia, men’s 58 kg.).

Also on tap are the team competition in tennis and soft tennis.

Batista to make MMA Debut this March

MANILA, Philippines — Looks like “The Animal” has grown tired of fake slams and scripted antics in the pro wrestling world and is now bound to follow the footsteps of fellow World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) stars Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar towards an action-packed career in the octagon.

The 41-year-old wide-bodied Dave Bautista, whose father David is a Filipino, is reportedly in talks with mixed martial arts (MMA) promoter Strikeforce for his much anticipated MMA debut.

"We're real close. We actually agreed on a number last week and we're sorting stuff out," Bautista told DC 101 in a Monday morning radio interview, as quoted by MMAFighting.com. "We should have a deal real soon. Hopefully I'll be fighting in March."

The Filipino-Greek star seemingly had a falling out with the WWE, and thus decided to pursue an MMA career, where his former colleagues Lashley and Lesnar are now thriving, with the latter now being named the reigning UFC heavyweight champion.

“The grind of professional wrestling... nothing is more brutal, Bautista said. “I told my mom I wanted to get into fighting. She was scared to death. I said, 'Mom, the last few years I was an inch away from breaking my neck every night and now you're worried about me being punched in the face?"

Bautista, who is said to be training with Jake Shield and the Diaz borthers earlier this year, revealed that he has underwent rigorous training sessions on Filipino martial arts Kali, Muay Thai, and grappling.

Will Cooling of Inside Fights breaks down what lies ahead for Bautista’s future MMA career:

"Unlike Brock Lesnar or even Bobby Lashley, Bautista has no amateur wrestling experience having been a club bouncer and bodybuilder before being signed by Vince McMahon and company. He also has a history of injuries, having been out of action at various times due to problems with his triceps, biceps, and hamstring.

For these reasons there had been significant skepticism about the seriousness of Bautista’s commitment to a future mixed martial arts career, despite the former pro-wrestler and aspiring actor showing genuine enthusiasm for the sport and dedicated when training at the Cesar Gracie camp."

Reports have it that Strikeforce is eyeing to hold a fight pitting Lashley and Bautista, supposedly as the latter’s MMA debut fight.

Mo Twister, Shalala Reveal 'Threats'

MANILA, Philippines - Mo Twister and Shalala have been besieged with threats which they think have something to do with their job on "Juicy."

According to Mo Twister, the threats usually come via text message, and these often allegedly hint at more than just bodily harm.

The controversial radio-TV personality is unperturbed, however, as he said he had been receiving such since his career got reinvigorated via his “Forbidden Questions” program in FM radio station Magic 89.9.

Shalala, who prior to his stint on “Juicy” was seen on German Moreno’s “Walang Tulugan” on GMA-7, conversely is somewhat anxious with the continued barrage of “threats” he is receiving.

The host-writer said he is not used to being harassed. He wishes that it would stop and soon.

The two deduced that the threats may have been provoked in part by the success of their show, airing daily on TV5.

“Juicy,” is said to be gaining ground in terms of rating. More than that, similar shows on rival networks ABS-CBN and GMA have allegedly started copying the show’s format.

“Juicy” features showbiz-related rumors and “blind items,” which the hosts, including ringleader Cristy Fermin, would often spice with their own views and anecdotes.

37,679 pass nursing board exam; Ateneo de Naga grad is No. 1

A total of 37,679 examinees passed the July 2010 Nurse Licensure Examination, with a nursing graduate of the Ateneo De Naga University (ADNU) in Camarines Sur topping the list of passers.

A complete list of passers released by the Professional Regulatory Commission (PRC) on Friday showed that only 41.4 percent of the 91,008 examinees passed the exam given on July 3 and 4.

The PRC said the exam’s topnotcher was Rayan Abogado Oliva of ADNU, who had a score of 86.8 percent.

He was followed by Aileen Ancanan Austria of the De Los Santos-STI College, Inc. (86.40 percent); Allyce Joana Toledo De Leon and Anna Vanessa Ang Gan of the University of Santo Tomas (both with 86 percent); Alyssa Leonila Dela Silva Guiam of the Centro Escolar University-Manila (85.80 percent); and Charmaine Camacho Gauiran of the Remedios Trinidad Romualdez Memorial School (85.6 percent).

They are joined by 85 other passers, most of whom had tied scores, in the list of the Top 10 passers.

While ADNU produced this year’s topnotcher, the University of the Philippines (UP) Manila, Saint Paul University in Iloilo, and Chinese General Hospital College of Nursing and Liberal Arts in Manila were No. 1 in the passing rate.

UP Manila and Saint Paul garnered a 100 percent passing rate while Chinese General received a passing rate of 99 percent.

Meanwhile, the PRC said the examination results of five examinees will be withheld until the PRC determines their "liabilities" under the rules and regulations governing the licensure examination.

The July 2010 nursing board exam was held in Manila, Baguio, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu, Dagupan, Davao, Iloilo, La Union, Legazpi, Lucena, Pagadian, Pampanga, Tacloban, Tuguegarao and Zamboanga.
