TARLAC CITY — Fifteen-year-old Maika de Oro of Western Visayas broke her own Palarong Pambansa record twice on her way to victory in discus throw Friday.

De Oro, one of three Bacolod athletes, leaped 36 meters on her fifth attempt, besting the 32.71 meters she recorded earlier in her second try.

She owns the previous mark of 32.62 meters she set two years ago in Puerto Princesa, Palawan.

It was De Oro’s fourth straight discus throw victory since dominating event when she was a fifth grader.

De Oro’s record-breaking performance overshadowed the triumphs of Daniel Noval, Vanessa del Valle, Eloisa Luzon, John Lorenzo, Raye Diane Ferrer and Jacob de los Santos.

Noval from Central Visayas, equaled Ronald Calunan’s Palaro record (22.19 seconds) in 1998 in Zamboanga City in the 200-meter secondary boys.

Del Valle of Calabarzon ruled 3000m run secondary girls (10.45), Luzon of Region 10 topped 200m (25.94 seconds), Lorenzo of Central Luzon ruled high jump elementary boys (1.58 meters), and Ferrer of Western Visayas topped elementary girls 200m (27.50 seconds).

Shut out in athletics, the National Capital Region struck in boys’ baseball.

Represented by Marikina and coached by former national player Eric Gismundo, NCR ousted Western Visayas, 11-6, to advance in the elementary final against the winner between host Central Luzon and Northern Mindanao.

Francis Michael Gismundo pitched a two-hitter and recorded three homeruns and Marco Reyes added one for NCR.

Bannered by Muntinlupa, the Big City batters eliminated host Central Luzon, 6-0, to arrange a title date with Western Visayas, 7-3, conqueror of Region 12, in the secondary level.

Defending champion Calabarzon lost to host Central Luzon in the semis, 6-8, paving the way for NCR and Western Visayas to slug it out for the crown.

The Palaro draws to a close Saturday with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Harry Angping as guest of honor.
