MANILA, Philippines—(UPDATE) First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo was rushed to the hospital Thursday morning due to back pains related to his past heart surgery, Malacanang said Thursday.

The First Gentleman was brought to the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Global City in Taguig at around 8 a.m. after complaining of back pains that was traced to an aorta operation in 2007, Press Secretary Crispulo Icban said, quoting Juliet Gopez-Cervantes, Arroyo’s attending physician.

The First Gentleman will remain in the hospital for “intense medical observation,” after he developed “re-dissection in the thoracic aorta” related to his past surgery.

“The condition calls for intense medical care to control blood pressure and heart rate to prevent further re-dissection. A rupture can cause compression of the blood supply to valve,” said the first gentleman’s cardiac surgeon Dr. Rommel Carino.

“He is under continuous monitoring in the coronary care unit of St. Lukes Global City. Right now, we are controlling vital signs and back pains,” he said in a statement.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo skipped her morning schedules to be with her husband.

Arroyo was supposed to address the Prosecutors League in Manila Hotel at 10 a.m. and was scheduled to inspect the housing for soldiers in Camp Tecson in San Miguel, Bulacan at 12 noon.

In November of 2008, a commercial jet carrying the President for an annual APEC summit in Peru was forced to make an emergency landing in Japan after her husband suffered severe abdominal pains.
