Chino Trinidad formally quits PBL post

Chino Trinidad said Tuesday that he’s confident his successor can inject new ideas to the Philippine Basktball League (PBL) after formally announcing his retirement as commissioner of the country's premier amateur cage league.

"Naniniwala ako na may maraming mas mahuhusay sa akin na makakapag-handle ng PBL," Trinidad said during the PSA Forum held at Shakey's UN Avenue.

The 42-year-old Trinidad earlier announced his retirement in a Facebook message that caught PBL members by surprise.

During Trinidad’s term, many players rose to become stars in the PBA such as Purefoods’ James Yap and Don Allado, Rain or Shine’s Gabe Norwood, Ty Tang and Sol Mercado, Sta. Lucia’s Kelly Williams, Talk ‘N Text’s Jason Castro and Ranidel de Ocampo, Ginebra’s Yancy de Ocampo and Air21’s Renren Ritualo.

When asked about the legacy he left in the league, Trinidad said: "Mahirap magsabi ng legacy, siguro yung history na lang mag-judge sa akin kung paano ang paghandle ko sa PBL.”

"Ang masasabi ko lang for the last 10 years, the league has been a survivor and the league gave me the platform to discover the skills that I thought na wala ako when they appointed me in 2000."

Trinidad, whose resignation was accepted by league chairman Ding Camua and owner Jappy Pascual of Pascual Laboratories, said Executive Director Butch Maniego will take the rein until such time that the board can find his replacement.
