BAGUIO CITY – President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is ready to peacefully turn over the presidency to the next set of leaders who will be chosen during the May 10, 2010 automated elections, Press Secretary Crispulo Icban Jr. said over the weekend.
In her numerous provincial trips for the past several months, Icban noted that the President had stated clearly that she will peacefully step down from power and turnover the reigns of government to the next set of leaders, allaying fears she will prolong her stay in power.
Icban cited instances where numerous requests for the rehabilitation of roads and other infrastructure projects were turned down by President Arroyo.
Those matters will be left to the next administration, a clear indication that there will be a turnover of power come June 30, 2010, Arroyo has said.
The Press secretary also believes changes that will occur in the government will be undertaken peacefully in order to sustain the country’s positive economic growth.
On the status of the first-ever automated elections in the country, Icban explained that the Commission on Elections (Comelec), Smartmatic-TIM consortium, and other election watchdogs have been doing well in laying the ground for a clean, honest, orderly, and peaceful elections.
Icban said the President has gone through numerous challenges and has accomplished a lot to bring development to the countryside. In the end, Icban said, it will be history that will eventually judge her.
He said that the President still believes she can do a lot more to help improve the economy, the reason she is seeking a congressional seat in her home province of Pampanga.
