Fil-Ams Vera, Muñoz to see action in UFC events

Filipino-American mixed martial artists Brandon “The Truth” Vera and Mark “The Filipino Wrecking Machine” Muñoz are set to slug it out at The Octagon in the coming months in separate Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) events.

The 32-year-old Vera headlines UFC Live: Vera vs Jones on March 21 at the 1STBANK Center (formerly Odeum Colorado) in Broomfield, Colorado. He will face 22-year-old Jon “Bones” Jones.

Vera has 11 wins and 4 losses while Jones has 9 wins and 1 defeat, according to UFC.com.

The Fil-Am, who is fighting out of San Diego, California, lost to Randy Couture by unanimous decision in UFC 105: Couture vs Vera last November 14.

He earlier won over Krzysztof Soszynski via unanimous decision in UFC 102 last August 29, 2009; and Michael Patt by technical knockout in UFC 96 on March 7, 2009.

Other fights in UFC Live: Vera vs Jones are Junior Dos Santos vs Gabriel “Napao” Gonzaga, Cheick Kongo vs Paul “The Headhunter” Buentello, Alessio “Legionarius” Sakara vs James “The Sandman” Irvin, Duane “Bang” Ludwig vs Spencer “The King” Fisher, and Clay “The Carpenter” Guida vs Shannon Gugerty.

The matches Eliot “The Fire” Marshall vs Vladimir “The Janitor” Matyushenko, John “Doomsday” Howard vs Daniel Roberts, Brendan “The Hybrid” Schaub vs Chase Gormley, Mike Pierce vs Rob “The Rosedale Reaper” Kimmons, and Eric “Red” Schafer vs Jason “Hitman” Brilz round up the UFC Live:Vera vs Jones fight card.

The event headlined by Vera will be followed by UFC 111: St-Pierre vs Hardy on March 27 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre will defend his title against Dan “The Outlaw” Hardy in the main event while former two-time heavyweight champion Frank Mir will take on Shane Carwin for the interim UFC heavyweight championship title.

UFC will then fly to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates for the first time to stage UFC 112: Invincible at Yas Island on April 10.

The fights between middleweight champ Anderson “The Spider” Silva and Demian Maia and Frankie “The Answer” Edgar and lightweight champion BJ “The Prodigy” Penn headline the Abu Dhabi event.

Meantime, UFC Hall of Famer Matt Hughes will take on Renzo Gracie, Paul “Relentless” Taylor will go against John “Guns” Gunderson, and Nick “Slick” Osipczak will face Rick “The Horror” Story.

Muñoz, 32, is scheduled to fight Kendall “Da Spyder” Grove (13-6).

The Fil-Am (7-1) fighting out of Vallejo, California is coming off a win in UFC 108: Evans vs Silva where he beat Ryan Jensen by submission (other) last January 2.

He also won over Nick Catone last August 29 via split decision in UFC 102: Couture vs Nogueira but was knocked out by Matt Hamill in UFC 96: Jackson vs Jardine last March 7, 2009.
